Stanley Milstein
Professor, History of Medicine

Stanley Milstein, 86, passed away recently. (Obituary published November 15, 2018.) He played the cello in the All New York City Orchestra in High School, and in college won the National Collegiate Championship for dramatic reading. He was a graduate of the City College of New York, and received both his MA and MD degrees from The University of Iowa. Between graduate school and Medical school he served as a medic in the United States Army where he was stationed in Orleans, France with postwar American occupation forces. He was discharged from the Army the same year the Allies declared an end to the occupation of Germany in 1955. Returning to the US he went to Medical School on the GI Bill, and then moved to Phoenix for his internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in 1961. Stan played the cello as a charter member of the Arizona Cello Society and taught the History of Medicine at ASU for a decade. He and his wife, Jeanne, sang together in the Phoenix Bach and Madrigal Society. A thrice published author, he worked on the English translations of Adam Politzer's "History of Otology" and Jacques Joseph's "Rhinoplasty and Facial Plastic Surgery", making two landmark medical texts available to the English speaking world. In 1987, Stan was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and retired from medical practice. He is survived by his wife Jeanne, three sons and four grandchildren. Graveside services will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018 at 11:30 am at Beth El Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren St., Phoenix, AZ 85009.
