Sherwin "Jay" Klein
Adjunct Professor in Psychology Dept.
March 12, 2006
Dr. Sherwin ("Jay") Klein, 87 years old, passed away peacefully in a Phoenix hospital on March 12, 2006 after a relatively brief illness. Dr. Klein was born on 1/13/19 in Toledo, Ohio and graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 1940 with a degree in biology. From 1940-1945, Dr. Klein served his country as an officer in the army working with a top level security clearance. He entered graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania and obtained his Ph.D. in Psychology in 1951. From 1951-1963, Dr. Klein taught neuroscience at Penn and also had a dual assignment at the Philadelphia Naval Base. His research team at the Naval Base contributed data that was used in the design of the first space suits for NASA. In 1964, Dr. Klein left Philadelphia to chair the Psychology Department as the first and most senior full professor hired by a new University in Dayton, Ohio -- Wright State University. Wright State now has an enrollment of approximately 17,000 students. Dr. Klein retired from Wright State in 1987 and moved to Sun Lakes, Arizona. Retirement was short-lived, though, as Arizona State University asked him to be an adjunct professor, a position he held until age 80. During his professional life, Dr. Klein lectured extensively in many universities across the country and around the world. He was a member of many professional societies and a fellow of the American Academy of Sciences. Dr. Klein's passions were his love of travel and family. He was a world traveler and visited every continent as well as virtually every country on the globe. Dr. Klein was proud to count many people he met on his travels around the world as close friends. Above all else, he was proudest of his son, Andy, a Maricopa County Superior Court Judge, daughter-in-law Linda, and grand-daughters Elyse and Lauren. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and friend. Dr. Klein was a fiercely independent man who lived a rich and full life on his own terms until the very end. He is pre-deceased by his wife Margery in 1976 and by another son, John, in 1981.
