Robert served his country proudly as a member of the United States Army, from which he received his Honorable Discharge. 

Robert received his B.A. from Northwestern State University, M.Ed. from Louisiana State University and his Ed.D. from University of North Dakota.

He was a Professor at Arizona State University for over 50 years and had lived in Arizona since 1965. 

He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Minnie (Robertson) Gryder.   He is survived by his two children.
