Radio Play-by-Play for ASU Football, Basketball & Baseball

Robert S Davies spent two years at the College of Wooster before transferring to Ohio State. Parents retired to Arizona in late 1950's and Bob followed. He transferred to Arizona State University for a year before taking his first television job in Yuma, Arizona at KIVA-TV. He left KIVA to work with Jim "Haw Haw" Hawthorne, a Los Angeles celebrity who had purchased KOLD radio in Yuma where Bob did play-by-play and recreation for the Yuma Sun Sox, a class C minor league baseball team. He was then drafted by his Ohio draft board, spent two years in Weisbaden, Germany at the air base there, later being honorably discharged in the summer of 1957. He returned to Phoenix and immediately went to work for KOOL-TV. He also registered for school at ASU and after a year completed a BA, with distinction, in mass communications while working full time at KOOL-TV Channel 10. He spent 25 years with KOOL Radio-TV serving in many capacities including weatherman, editorialist, the voice of the Copper State documentary series, host of an early morning talk show, and at various times served as the host for an afternoon bingo show and later as host of the daily Folk Sing show. He worked outside too, doing the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce Rodeo parade and Fiesta Bowl parades. He kept his Interest in sports on the radio side by doing play-by-play for ASU football, basketball and baseball doing the College World Series games in Omaha in 1965 when ASU won the NCAA championship, as well as reports from Phoenix Open golf tournaments. As a volunteer, he served as President of the Phoenix Press Box Association as well as the boards of the Florence Crittenden Home and Big Brother-Big Sisters. For a period of some six years he was a pronouncer for the Arizona state spelling bee, In the late 50's Bob was President of the Grand Canyon Council of the Boy Scouts of America and also served as President of the local Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He retained his Interest in ASU by serving as the 1958 President of the ASU Alumni Association and later followed Den Devine as President of the Sun Angel Foundation. After Gene Autry and Tom Chauncey sold KOOL-Radio-TV, he spent the next few years as a VP for Community Affairs for Times Mirror Cable. While at ASU he was honored for his efforts in the 1978 annual Alumni Fund Campaign and in 1958 won the Centennial Award of Merit, He was made a Honorable Member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle Award as well as a Board of Governors Emmy in 1963-64 after serving as the President of the Chapter. He was installed in the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2017. Next to ASU, his great love was the Fiesta Bowl. He has been a volunteer since 1969 serving on the Board of Directors for some 14 years and was President in 1983. He still volunteers currently serving as Chairman for the Fiesta Bowl VIP Hospitality Suite for the bowl game. After retiring, Bob volunteered for the annual LPGA golf tour stop in Phoenix, announcing the ladies off the first tee. He also has helped the Charles Schwab Championship doing the same thing for the men, He also has worked the Phoenix Suns Charity Tournament and helps out with several other local charity tournaments including service to the Board of Visitors annual fashion show.
