Mary Kristine Asplund Daines started at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, but with encouragement from two older siblings and a bitter winter in Edmonton she transferred to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Kris graduated from BYU.

She received a master's of Fine Arts in English from Arizona State University,

After her youngest daughter entered High School, Kris went back to school at ASU and was employed by ASU for many years as an instructor in English composition and creative writing.

Survivors include her husband David (86), two sons, two daughters and 12 grandchildren.

All her other siblings are deceased.
