Mark Ellis Sunkett

Dr. Mark Ellis Sunkett, 65, passed away June 26, 2014. Mark was a professor at ASU in the School of Music since 1976. He was a graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music and Temple University both in Philadelphia, and held a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of Pittsburgh. He performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, was a member of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, and was principal tympanist with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. As an ethnomusicologist, his research regularly took him to Senegal, West Africa, resulting in the formation of an African Dance Troupe, and the publication of books, articles, disks, and videotapes. Dr. Sunkett is survived by his wife Phyllis Batchler-Sunkett, a brother, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his parents and a sister. Services will be held in Philadelphia at Ivy Hill Cemetery 1201 Easton Road, on Saturday, July 19 at 10:00 am in the Small Chapel. A memorial service will be held at ASU at a future date.
