April 22, 2026

Dr. James H. Foard graduated from the College of Wooster in 1970 and earned a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Stanford University in 1977.

James joined the faculty of Religious Studies at Arizona State University, where he taught both undergraduate and graduate courses for more than 30 years. An outspoken advocate of non-theological constructions of religion and Religious Studies as a discipline, he was the first to offer courses on the Religions of Asia and on Buddhism at ASU. His knowledge of Japanese cultural traditions ranged from premodern to contemporary eras. He was popular with ASU students, winning several teaching awards including the Last Lecture Series and the Promoter of Excellence Award (both selected by students).

For more than a decade, he led a summer program at Hiroshima University, where ASU students learned about Japanese culture and religion. James retired in 2008.

James is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Miko, his daughter, his son-in-law, and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents and sister.

A memorial service has taken place for close family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Jame's name to the ASU Foundation Scholarship/Fellowship Account for Religious Studies.
