Irene A. Benedict, 94, passed away on January 16, 2015. In 1951 she married Charles H. Andrews and moved to Phoenix; he passed away in 1959. In 1962 she married Joel A. Benedict. He was ASU’s first director of Audiovisual Services, and in 1974 was appointed director of Media Research and Development. He retired in 1978, and passed away in 2001. Irene was a teacher, librarian and faculty member in the College of Education, retiring in 1978. The following comments are from Rob Spindler, ASU University Archivist and Head of Archives and Special Collections: “Irene and her beloved Joel were active members of the International Visual Literacy Association, and their interest in visual education and visual communication was a key feature of their careers in school librarianship and audio visual services. This enthusiasm led them to provide generous support for the Joel A. and Irene A. Benedict Visual Literacy Collection at the ASU Libraries. This special collection continues to provide a range of published and unpublished source materials documenting research and education in the use of visual materials, especially photographs and motion pictures, for communicating ideas in schools, industry and community settings. She assisted Archives and Special Collections staff in preserving Joel’s materials documenting his work at ASU. One discovery in that effort is the Joel Benedict Sun Devil Football Films from 1958. Irene was indeed a grand lady of ASU and a great supporter of the ASU Libraries.” Irene is preceded in death by a brother and two husbands, Charles and Joel. She is survived by a step-daughter, seven grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, a nephew and two nieces. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 21, 2015. A mass at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church (2121 Rural Road, Tempe) and immediately after a gathering at Cottonwood Cemetery in Cottonwood to pay final respects. Any donations made be made to: Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St. Phoenix, AZ, 85014. (Sources: Arizona Republic and Rob Spindler)
