Herbert Mark Kaufman

Dr. Herbert Mark Kaufman went to Harper College and earned a B.A degree in Economics in 1967. He then entered the Ph.D. program in Economics at Pennsylvania State University, receiving his doctorate in Economics in September of 1972. His first position after leaving Penn State was at the Federal National Mortgage Association in Washington, D.C. However, his desire was to return to academia and in 1973 he secured a position as Assistant Professor of Economics at Arizona State University, later becoming a Full Professor in 1980. In 1988 he became Professor of Finance and in November of 1991 he became Chair of the Finance Dept at ASU, a position he held until 2004. He was at ASU for 37 years before retiring in 2010. He published extensively in academic journals on topics in investments, financial institutions, monetary policy, government sponsored enterprises, and capital markets. He authored two textbooks: Modern Money and Banking published by D.C.Heath and Financial Institutions, Financial Markets, and Money published by Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich. He consulted on financial issues for the New York Stock Exchange, corporations, commercial banks, savings and loan associations, government agencies, including the U.S. Treasury, the World Bank, the Congressional Budget Office, the General Accounting Office, as well as major law firms. He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Helen; his son and wife; two granddaughters; his niece and husband; his nephew and wife; and his two brothers-in-law. He is preceded in death by his dear sister. A celebration of his life will be held at later dates in Dallas and Arizona.
