George Boutell, 74, passed away on September 16, 2018. In the early 1960's George was ranked the No. 1 Amateur Golfer in the United States by Golf Digest and Golf World magazines. Widely known for his extraordinary short game, George played on the ASU golf team and was named 1st Team All American. He played on the PGA Tour from 1968 to 1973 and then was a golf professional at Papago Golf Course for several years. From 1975 to 1985 he was the ASU men's golf coach, and twice was named Coach of the Year in the then PAC 10. Thereafter, George spent 20 years as a PGA Tour Rules Official and, following his retirement, he was honored with the 2009 Anser Award by the Southwest Section of the PGA of America. He was inducted into the   ASU Hall of Fame and the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame. George is survived by a brother and two nieces. A Celebration of George's Life will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday, October 1 at Camelback Golf Club (7847 N. Mockingbird Lane, Scottsdale AZ 85253). Casual dress is acceptable. Parking may be limited, so please carpool if possible. In lieu of flowers, George hoped that memorial contributions would be made to the Mayo Clinic, Department of Development, 13400 East Shea Blvd, Scottsdale, AZ.
