Gale Lee Richards, 88, of Tempe, Arizona, passed away on June 28, 2007. He was born in Long Run, West Virginia on July 31, 1918. Gale is predeceased by his parents, Robert Amaziah and Edna Jane (Scott). He is survived by his wife of 65 years Barbara Lee (Neely) and their three children Robin Lee, Wendell Scott, and Jeffrey Marshall. Gale earned several degrees during his college years; a B.A. from University of Akron where he was a Pixley scholar, and a M.A. and Ph.D. from University of Iowa where he was a C.S. Knight Memorial scholar. Gale gained a great deal of satisfaction out of teaching others; he was an instructor of speech at University of Akron, an assistant professor of speech at University of Nevada, an assistant professor of speech at University of Washington, an associate professor of speech at University of Southern California, and a professor of communication at Arizona State University where he was also the chairman of the department. Gale served as a Consulting Editor for both Western Speech and Journal of Communication. He contributed many articles to communication journals. Gale served on the board of directors for Phoenix Little Theatre. He proudly served in the navy during WWII and became an instructor for them after the war. Gale was a member of a number of professional organizations including the Speech Communication Association, the International Communication Association, the American Institute of Parliamentarians, the Western Speech Communication Association which honored him with a Distinguished Service award in 1989, Blue Key, Phi Kappa Phi, Delta Sigma Rho, and Rotary Club. Gale has been mentioned in several publications including Who's Who in America (1974 -), the Directory of American Scholars, the International Dictionary of Biography (University of Cambridge Press 12th Edition), and Outstanding Educators of 1970.
