Frederick L. Whitam, 76, died in July 2009. He was Professor Emeritus in Sociology, and was one of the faculty who established the ASU Ph.D. program in 1972.  Fred spent over 30 years teaching and engaging in research at ASU.  Prior to joining the ASU Department of Sociology in 1965, he earned his Ph.D. at Indiana University.  Fred also had served as an Assistant Professor and Sociology Department Chair at Millsaps College in Mississippi, as an Instructor at the State University of New York's Fashion Institute of Technology, and as a Visiting Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin.  His book publications included The Protestant Spanish Community (1960) and the co-authored book with Robin Mathy on Male Homosexuality in Four Societies:  Brazil, Guatemala, the Philippines, and the United States (1986).
