Eugene Lombardi

Conductor, Symphony Orchestra
Eugene Lombardi, 93, passed away October 17, 2016. Gene served in the Army Air Force during World War II, trained as a bombardier and was extremely active in the entertainment corps. Education included a Bachelors of Arts degree from Westminster College, a Masters of Arts from Columbia University, an Education Specialists degree from George Peabody College, and a Doctorate of Music from Westminster College. Gene moved to Phoenix in 1950 to lead the Orchestra at Phoenix Union High School. In 1957 he accepted the position of conductor of the Symphony Orchestra in the College of Music at Arizona State College, later to become ASU. He retired from ASU in 1989 having served as a Professor of Music, Violin teacher and Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra. Eugene was Concertmaster of the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra for 19 years, Concertmaster of the Flagstaff Festival Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. He was a member of the New Art String Quartet in residence at ASU. He was also the Conductor of the Phoenix, Arizona People's Pops Orchestra, the Phoenix Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Phoenix Symphonette, the Fine Arts Strings at Scottsdale Community College and the Sun Cities Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Lombardi is the recipient of the Music Appreciation Award from the City of Phoenix, the Gold Medal Award from the National Society of Arts and Letters, the Distinguished Teacher Award from the ASU Alumni Association and the Excellence in Music Teaching Award from the Arizona Music Educators Association. Eugene is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Sue Lombardi, a son and a brother. Eugene’s ASURA Video History Interview is available.
