Elizabeth Bruening Lewis, 73, passed away on June 7, 2014. Her academic career included B.A. in Philosophy, Vassar College, 1963; M.A. in Philosophy from ASU, 1969; and a Ph.D. in Medieval History with a specialty in Symbolism in Christian Art from Georgetown University in 1975. She taught Logic at Phoenix College, Humanities at ASU, and served as member of Adjunct Faculty of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Elizabeth was an avid writer of non-fiction and fiction. In Phoenix, she was the first Women's Editor at the Evening American newspaper where she worked from 1963-65. She wrote articles and reviews for many publications including History and Arts International. She published three fiction and three non-fiction books. Four of these have won first place national awards. She was an active volunteer in the Phoenix community including many years as a Senior Docent with the Phoenix Art Museum and a 50 year member of Arizona Press Women; National Federation of Press Women. She served on many boards including the Arizona Board of the Nature Conservancy, the Board of the Arizona Center for the Book, and the Arizona Historical Records Advisory Board. She is survived by her husband, Orme Lewis, Jr., two  children and five grandchildren. Services will be held at the Franciscan Renewal Center on July 1 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in honor of Elizabeth to Boyce Thompson Arboretum, 37615 U.S. Highway 60, Superior, AZ 85173.
