Earl Robbins

Earl Reding Robbins, 90, passed away on April 26, 2016. After serving the U.S. Navy, he obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech in 1950. Following graduation, he worked as an Electrical Engineer for General Electric for 11 years and received two waveguide patents. In 1957, he moved to Phoenix with the new Computer Division of GE and started working on his PhD and was an instructor. He decided to stay with teaching and acquired his PhD from ASU in 1968. He taught at ASU first in the Electrical Engineering Department and then in the Computer Science Department until he retired in 1989 as a Professor Emeritus. After retiring from teaching, he worked part time at Intel Corp. for two years and then did student advising for the Computer Science Department at ASU for another two years. Earl was also active in the IEEE going through all the elected chairs in the Phoenix Section and then became the Phoenix Section Chairman in the 70's. He was also a member of the American Society for Engineering Education. Earl is survived by his wife, Joyce, a brother, seven children and step children, 16 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
