Douglas Lynn Jeffries
Visiting Assistant Professor

Douglas Lynn Jeffries, 68, passed away October 28, 2018. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion from Mid-America Nazarene College and then served four years in the US Navy as a Cryptologic Technician Interpreter, achieving the rank of Petty Officer, 200 Class. He returned to college earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Wichita State University, and a Master of Science in Botany from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. He received a Ph.D. in Plant Ecology from ASU and then taught two years at ASU as a Visiting Assistant Professor and Director of the Central Arizona Science and Engineering Fair. In 1991 he moved to Clarksville and began teaching at the University of the Ozarks where he was a Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies; he taught one of the few classes in Lichenology in the region. Dr. Jeffries was a co-sponsor of the university's environmental organization, the Planet Club. In 1997 he and the Planet Club began an Annual Tree Planting Day that has resulted in planting of 10 to 15 trees on campus every year until his retirement in 2016. At Ozarks, he received the Above and Beyond, and Advisor of the Year Awards in 2010, and in 2011 was awarded the Bagwell Outstanding Faculty Award. Due to declining health, Dr. Jeffries retired from teaching in May 2016 after 35 years of full and part-time teaching at the University level, and 25 years at the University of the Ozarks. In 2012 he was given the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award from the Arkansas Urban Forestry Council. Dr. Jeffries serves the local community as President of Clarksville's Tree Board as a part of the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA program. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Humane Society of Johnson County / River Valley Humane Society who run the Needy Paws Animal Shelter since 2009, and was President of the Board of Directors for three years. His family consists of two feline companions, April and Sonja, both adopted from Needy Paws Animal Shelter in 2010.
