Douglas Clayton Cornell, 65, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Ashaway, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2007, at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Ariz. Born in Westerly on May 9, 1942, to Clayton D. Cornell, and Eleanor E. (Watson) Cornell, he is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Norine Ann (Leahy) Cornell; his loving mother Eleanor E. Cornell; sons, James Allen Cornell and his wife Belinda, David Scott Cornell, Mark Douglas Cornell and his wife Constance; grandchildren, Mitchell Anthony Dunlap, Andrew Nicholas Dunlap, Tjaden Nichole Cornell, Madeline Grace Cornell, Emma Faith Cornell and Olivia Joy Cornell. He was predeceased by his father, Clayton Douglas Cornell. He was a 1966 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, and former employee with the University. He and his wife moved to Arizona in 1987, while being employed by Arizona State University until his retirement in April 2004. He was an avid Olympic style weightlifter competing in the United States and Canada. He was an active member of Word of Grace Church in Mesa. He will be missed by many family members and friends, and his legacy will live on in many people's lives for years to come.
