Dr. Donald Charles Haberman graduated magna cum laude from Rutgers University in 1955, where he rowed for the crew team and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in English Literature from Yale University in 1962 and began his teaching career at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. He later taught at the University of Montana in Missoula before joining the faculty at Arizona State University in 1967. He retired in 1995 as a full professor. Dr. Haberman's academic expertise was in British 18th-century and contemporary American literature. A recipient of a National Humanities League grant, he published two books on the plays of Thornton Wilder, a bibliography on George Bernard Shaw, and several articles ranging in subject from Plautus to Proust. He was especially devoted to teaching, finding joy in the classroom with students of all backgrounds, including Native American undergraduates in his freshman composition courses. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lidia; two daughters and sons-in-law; and three granddaughters. Donations may be made in his honor to Hospice of The Valley. |
