Don Hopfer
KAET-TV - 1975 to 2002

March 30, 2006
Don Hopfer, 52, passed away March 30, 2006. He was born April 15, 1953
in Chicago, Illinois, to Donald. J. and Marjorie Hopfer. Don graduated from Notre Dame University in 1975 and moved to Tempe to be near his family and the Chicago Cubs during spring training. It was there that he met and then married Devi, his wife of 27 years. Don became a KAET-TV volunteer in 1975 and a full-time employee in 1977. He spent over 25 years at KAET producing programs, mentoring ASU students and creating "cutting edge" television. Don's numerous credits included the first globally-televised live open-heart surgery program, live coverage of Arizona Governor Evan Mecham's impeachment proceedings and news pool coverage of the Pope's visit to Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe. His passion for photography led him to produce the acclaimed documentary, "Barry Goldwater: Photographs and Memories," recognized with Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards for his direction. His production of "Thieves of Time" was honored with an International Film and Television Award and a Cine Golden Eagle Award. "Visions of Arizona," one of Don's favorite productions, attracted many awards, as did "Arizona Memories of the 60's." Don touched every KAET person and production as an executive producer, director or coach -- always willing to share his experience and extend his hand to anyone at anytime. He will forever be remembered as a person who dedicated himself to making others look, sound and be their very best, both on and off screen. Witty, wise and quick with a quip, Don had a lust for life. He was charismatic and compassionate, and making all those around him feel like his best friend. Don loved his family, adored Notre Dame and cheered for the Cubbies, win or lose. He was totally devoted to his wife, Devi, whom he affectionately called, "The Goddess." He also had a soft spot for his four feline friends – especially the newest arrival, "Bebe." Don is survived by his mother, Marjorie, his sister, Susan, her husband, Brian, and their triplets, Olivia, Laura and Kevin.
