Daniel Mardian, Sr.,93, whose motto was "Make it Happen", passed away on June 29, 2010. Dan served in WWII, with the Army Corp of Engineers in the Philippines and New Guinea, and graduated from the Army Command and General Staff College, later retiring from the reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel. Dan moved to Phoenix with his wife, Kathy, in 1946 to join his oldest brother, Aram, who had started Mardian Construction. Aram, Dan, and Sam (Phoenix Mayor from 1960-64) were all partners in the business in the 1940's and were joined by their youngest brother, Robert (Assistant US Attorney General), in the 1970's. Dan was president of Mardian Construction until 1978, when the company was sold to Perini Building Company. Mardian Construction contributed to Phoenix's prominence with many of Arizona's major structures including the State Capital Wings, Sky Harbor's Terminal Three, Sun Devil Stadium's expansion, ASU's Residence Hall, NAU's Walkup Skydome, and numerous other buildings. Dan was an avid supporter of ASU academics and athletics. In 1954, he asked the State Legislature to request the Board of Regents to add a school for construction at ASU which occurred in 1957. He served as President and Life Member of the Fiesta Bowl Committee, Chairman of the Sun Angel Foundation, Advisory Board Member for Construction Programs at ASU, and funded the Dan & Kathy Mardian ASU Construction Student Scholarship. Construction education and training was a passion. Dan was a member of and served on many construction and civic organizations. He received honors including the Medallion of Merit from the College of Engineering at ASU. Dan is survived by his wife Kathy, his five sons and their wives, twelve grandchildren, and his brother, Sam.
