ASU remembers
Arthur J. Haley
Asst. Professor, Dept. of Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance - 1975
Chair, Dept. of Leisure Studies - 1983 to 1991
Professor Emeritus - 2006
Dr. Arthur J. Haley, 68, ASU Professor Emeritus, Humanitarian, Connoisseur of Literature, History and Sports died in Phoenix, AZ on March 9, 2011. He was born in Boston and received his undergraduate degree from Stonehill College, where he played baseball. He earned his masters degree from Springfield College. After a couple of years teaching high school English, Art pursued a Ph.D. in the Parks, Recreation and Tourism program at Texas A & M. Art came to ASU as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance in the fall of 1975. The recreation program was invited to the new College of Public Programs as the Department of Leisure Studies in 1979 (now the School of Community Resources and Development in Public Programs at the Downtown campus). Art was appointed/elected Chair of the department in 1983 and served in that role until 1991. Under his leadership the areas of nonprofit management/American Humanics and tourism management flourished, in addition to the recreation program. Art retired in May of 2006, just as the school was moving to the new ASU Downtown campus. Art was instrumental in recruiting and developing a strong group of scholars and program leaders for all three programs in the School of Community Resources and Development. He will be greatly missed for his intellect, leadership, wit, and authentic "Boston accent."
