Alvin L. Smith, II, 37, passed away on June 30, 2019. He was awarded a football scholarship to Tulane University. In 2002, he transferred from Tulane University to Oregon State University. He thrived as a player at Oregon State receiving accolades such as Defensive Player of the Week, three Varsity Letters, and the All PAC-10 Team honorable mention list in 2006. Alvin's continued passion for the game of football landed him in the National Football League. In 2006, the San Diego Chargers signed him as an undrafted free agent. He later joined the Cleveland Browns. Also, he played for the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe. After three years playing professional football, he pursued graduate studies at the University of Washington in Sports Leadership that led him into his second career of coaching. At Portland State University he served as an Assistant Defensive Line Coach. He left Portland State to coach in the PAC-10 conference, serving as a Defensive Graduate Assistant at ASU for two seasons. After leaving ASU, Alvin served as a Defensive Line Coach for three seasons at Columbia University in New York City. He ended his coaching career at Wagner College in Staten Island, New York. Alvin's personal mission in coaching was to broaden the exposure of football talent in various communities, particularly underserved and underexposed communities. He routinely added high schools to his recruiting roster that traditionally hadn't been recruited by the colleges he represented. After the birth of his son he began his sales career as Sales Consultant with DePuy Synthes, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Even in this career, he thrived and received accolades for growing the business in his South Georgia territory. Alvin will be missed his son, his parents, sister, aunt and godmother, uncle and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The Celebration of Life Service for Alvin was held on Friday, July 12, 2019, at 11:00 AM; Ben Hill United Methodist Church, 2099 Fairburn Road, SW Atlanta, GA 30331. (Source: ASU Foundation)
