About the program
ASURA has had an Adopt-a-Family program almost since the organization's founding in 1991. It was initiated by ASURA's first elected president, Denis Kigin, in 1992. One family was helped until 2001, when the Board decided to support a second family.
Now ASURA works with the Tempe School District and ASU's Off campus Student Services to select families in need. The families are provided with clothing, food and holiday gifts each Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
The good the program does
Wonderful thank you letters, some with drawings, have been received from families that have received gifts from ASURA. They let us know how much they appreciate the help, especially at holiday times. One mother wrote, "although it has been years since Santa provided gifts in our household, my children truly appreciate Christmas now more than ever thanks to your generosity."
Some specifics about past recipients are available in the ASURA Annual Reports. These are issued each April.
If you would like to help purchase and wrap gifts and deliver them to the sponsoring agency for delivery to the families, contact the chair.
