ASU remembers
Winifred W. Doane
Professor of Genetics - 1977-1998
Dr. Winifred W. Doane was a retired professor from Arizona State University, where she taught genetics for 21 years. She also maintained a full research laboratory during that time, as well as maintaining an office for several years after retirement. Prior to coming to ASU in 1977, she taught biology and zoology courses at a couple of different colleges, including a 17-year stint at Yale University where she earned her PhD. Winifred was interested and well-versed in many topics, and especially science and the environment. She even helped preserve a section of waterfront near her prior home in Connecticut, through her involvement with a third political party in the 1970's. That area eventually became a park and boardwalk. Winifred was a champion of helping women in various capacities, including being the founder and first president of the Central Arizona Chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS). Winifred is survived immediately by her a son, a daughter in law, and many family members in the US and Canada, where her late husband, Chuck, was born and grew up. The family wishes she be remembered by continuously learning about this world. Anyone wishing to do so can contribute to environmental, scientific, women's issues and any charity that helps our fellow human. |
