William Howell

William C. "Bill" Howell,79, passed away on April 14, 2012. Bill received his BA '54, MA '56 and PhD. '58 in psychology from the University of Virginia. Dr. Howell served as tenured professor of Psychology at Ohio State University (1957 - 1968) and as professor and Psychology Department Chair at Rice University, Houston (1968 - 1989). Dr. Howell held the position of Chief Scientist for Human Resources at Brooks A.F.B in San Antonio before becoming Science Directorate of the American Psychological Association (APA) in Washington, D.C. in 1992. He served in that position until his retirement in 1997. At the time of his death Dr. Howell held adjunct professorships at both ASU and Rice Universities. Prior to his death, Dr. Howell served as editor of the journal Human Factors, associate editor of the American Psychologist, Chair of the National Research Council's Committee on Human Factors and was the 2012 recipient of the Raymond D. Fowler Award for Outstanding Contributions to APA. Dr. Howell is survived by his wife, Patricia Lilley Howell, two daughters, two sons, eight grandchildren and one sister.
