July 31, 2010
Walter E. Carter, “Ol’ Scoop” , 66, a Trenton, N.J. native, died recently in Mesa, AZ. Walter graduated from Trenton High School in 1962 and served his country in the U.S. Air Force. Upon his discharge from the service he lived in Bordentown, N.J. and Florence, N.J. He worked for over 25 years as a corrections officer. He retired and moved to Arizona in 1993. Once out West, Walter became an avid runner and his coup de grace was not only running in, but finishing the Tucson Marathon. He also worked at Arizona State University’s Polytechnic Campus where he became a beloved campus citizen very much involved in campus life and activities. He was the founder of the ever popular Thursday afternoon “Happy Hour” and of the “Dauntless Drumstix Dash,” which was a major fundraiser for the Polytechnic Classified Staff Association Scholarship endowment. Upon retirement from ASU, he was honored with the best retirement party ever. Upon his death, the scholarship he helped to support was renamed in his honor. Contribution can be made to the scholarship through the ASU Foundation. His many friends at the Polytechnic will miss him. Walter was predeceased by his father, Earl Carter, and his mother, Luella Carter. He is survived by his sister, Sandy of San Francisco; two nephews; and a goddaughter, Katie Ritter of Los Angeles.
