Thomas McCrea

Thomas James McCrea, 79, died May 29, 2016. For 23 years Tom was a linotype operator and newspaper page make up person with the Frank and Irma Connolly-owned Tempe Daily News. Tom received his training at Toronto's Central Technical School and had apprenticed at a prestigious print shop in that city. In his years at the Tempe Daily News, Tom helped high school and ASU journalism students put together their school newspapers while also teaching them about the how's and whys' of the page make up and printing processes. Not long after the Tempe Daily News was sold to Cox Newspapers in 1980 and soon became the Tempe Daily News Tribune (and eventually part of the East Valley Tribune along with the Mesa Tribune and two other East Valley newspapers), the Daily News back shop was dismantled. Tom was moved to the Mesa Tribune plant. Tom is survived by two daughters, a son, twelve grandchildren, and four siblings. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, a daughter and five siblings.
