Robert Henry Annan
Robert Henry “Bud" Annan, 78, passed away on October 4, 2016. Bud earned a BS from Kansas State ('60) and an MBA from George Washington University ('68) where he also completed postgraduate studies in International Economics. Later he taught as a guest lecturer at universities and served as a vital resource for ASU's solar energy program. His entire adult life was spent in service to his country, first as a USN Lieutenant and a Vietnam Veteran before being handpicked by Admiral Hyman Rickover for an elite group of engineers who helped usher in the country's "Nuclear Navy." After his military service, he began a 35-year career in the US federal government culminating in the position of Special Assistant to the Secretary of Energy and garnering the prestigious US Presidential Medal for Meritorious Service in 1993. His professional career was dedicated to the development and advancement of renewable energies specifically solar electricity in the US and in the developing world. His goal was to improve the lives of others by bringing badly needed electric power to impoverished and remote areas around the world including South Africa, India, the Amazon Rainforest and American Indian Reservations in particular.
