Janie earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Education at the University of Wyoming, where she was active in the Chi Omega Sorority.

She was an active member of the ASU Faculty Wives Club and numerous community organizations. Her husband, George, served initially as ASU Dean of Students and then as ASU Vice President Student Affairs.  Janie and George left ASU in 1981 when he accepted the position of President of the University of Texas at Tyler.

Janie was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Dr. George F. Hamm; two sons; two brothers and a sister. Janie is survived by a son; a daughter; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
