Dr. Miguel Flys, 81, passed away Monday, November 9, 2009. He was born in the Ukraine, graduated from high school in Salzburg, Austria, graduated from the University of Madrid in 1951 and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Madrid in 1954. In 1951, he immigrated to the United States. Dr. Flys was a specialist in contemporary Spanish literature and taught for over 50 years. Spanish poetry was his area of expertise. He taught at Catholic University, Washington, DC; Loyola University in Chicago, Bowling Green State University, and finally at ASU where he taught for 25 years before his retirement in 2001. While at ASU, Dr. Flys was Chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages for 8 years and oversaw the study abroad program in Spain for many years. He is survived by his wife, Felisa and their daughter, as well as by his four children from a previous marriage and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.
