Melvin Schlosser

Melvin Schlosser, 86, passed away on July 31, 2010. He joined the Army Air Corps in Nov. 1942 and served as an Airplane and Engine Mechanic until Dec. 1945. In 1949 he completed Airframe and Powerplant training at Curtis Wright Tech and went to work for Lockheed in Southern CA. In 1954 he went to work for Hughes Aircraft Corp. where he was instrumental in launching the first geosynchronous satellite, "Syncom 2". He went on to build several more satellites including "HS-308. In 1965 he was transfered to the team that designed and built all seven of the Surveyor Lunar Landers that preceded Project Apollo, that sent man to the moon. He left Hughes in 1969 and moved to Phoenix to open a gas station at 16th St and Camelback. In 1972 he moved to Tempe and went to work for ASU. He retired in 1987. He is survived by his wife Annie.
