May 2022 lessons from retirees
Lessons from Retirees freatures three articulate and insightful panelists, all recent retirees from ASU, who will share their experiences and advice for those considering retirement in the near future.
Frederick C. Corey started working at ASU in August 1986 and retired in September 2021. Over the years, he served as a faculty member in communication studies, Director of the School of Letters and Sciences, associate dean and interim dean of the College of Public Programs, Dean of University College and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. His teaching focused on fundamentals of human communication and performance studies, and his research explored personal narrative and the performance of gay culture.
Pat Schneider started working at ASU in 1985 in Computing Services (now known as the University Technology Office). Pat worked in many varied roles over the past 31+ years, from database administration, to network management and project management, supporting the University’s computing initiatives. Pat received her AA degree in accounting/data processing from the Fox Valley Technical College in 1974. She then received her BA in Philosophy and BS in Political Science from ASU in 1999. She has since received an MA in Political Philosophy/Theology from Notre Dame University. She is an avid student and is now working on a certificate program in Doctrine and Divinity from Notre Dame. Pat retired in 2017, she is an avid gardener, (she grows all her own vegetables year-round),and enjoys reading, pottery, taking classes and volunteering at her local library and her two feline "kids".
Dan L. Shunk is Professor Emeritus of Industrial Engineering in the School of Engineering at Arizona State University. He retired from ASU in 2018 after serving in various leadership and professorial capacities for 34 years. He continues to support ASU Engineering as well as the NGen program in Canada and CETYS Universidad in Baja, Mexico. Prior to ASU Dr. Shunk served on active duty in the US Air Force during the VietNam War era and later worked in industry for Rockwell and International Harvester. His last industry position was Vice President and General Manager of the Integrated Manufacturing Systems Division of GCA. He won the A. Alan B. Pritsker Teaching Award at ASU in 2015 and 2018, a Fulbright Award in 2002-2003, the 1996 SME International Award for Education, the 1990, 1991 and 1999 I&MSE Faculty of the Year award, the 1989 SME Region VII Educator of the Year award, chaired AutoFact in 1985, and won the 1982 SME Outstanding Young Engineer award. Shunk studied at Purdue where he received his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering in 1976.
