Max Effron
Max Effron,99, passed away on January 23, 2012. Born in Russia he left his family at the age of 17 and sailed across the Atlantic to Canada, then went to Detroit, where he joined his two brothers to start Effron Brothers Furs. While in Detroit Max married and shortly thereafter joined the army where he served from 1942 to 1946, assisting in translation and intelligence operations since he spoke Polish, Russian and German. Max moved to Aberdeen, Maryland in 1955, where he operated a furniture/hardware business for 17 years. He was a founder and vice president of the Ordinance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Grounds where he acted as a liaison between the US Army Ordnance School at Aberdeen and the Israeli Ordnance School. Max was awarded the Patriotic Civilian Service Medal from the Dept. of the Army. In 1980, Max and Mildred moved to Sun City West. He helped organize the Senior PGA Golf Tournament, and served as a trustee with the Sun Health Foundation, and was elected a Trustee Emeritus. While in Sun City, Max continued his civic service acting as a board member or chairman of numerous organizations including Jewish Education at ASU. Max raised funds helping to develop alliances between groups in Israel and the U.S.
