Martin Kenneth Newland

Martin Kenneth Newland, Colonel, USAF, Retired, 92, passed away November 10, 2010. He became interested in the Army Air Corps Flying Cadet program and received his certificate in 1939. With World War II imminent, he signed on with the Army in November 1940 and graduated with his Wings from Pilot Training in 1942. His first orders found him in Marana, Az as a Flight Instructor, where he trained many students for combat duty. He then recdeived orders to Okinawa. In the early 1950’s he and his family returned to Arizona where Ken was assigned to Arizona State College (later to be ASU), Tempe, as an Air Force ROTC instructor. He received his BS in Aeronautics there in 1954, and promptly headed off, family in tow, to Paris, France for a 4 year tour. They returned stateside in 1958. He switched from flying to the ICBM Missile and Space field and was instrumental in opening Vandenberg AFB, California, for the Strategic Air Command (SAC) in 1959. Several other duty assignments followed and Ken retired as a full Colonel September 1, 1970, after 30 years of devoted service to his country. He and his wife moved back to Tempe and he decided after a short while that retirement was not much to his liking. In 1971 he passed the Arizona Registrar of Contractors exams and founded Aquarian Age Pools, Inc. a construction company specializing in custom residential and commercial installations in the Valley. For the next 22 years he served the pool industry and was recognized as an expert in his field, including 2 terms as NSPI Arizona Chapter President, and earning numerous awards. He retired from the construction industry in 1993. Ken closely followed ASU Sun Devils sports teams. Hospice of Arizona and Alyce by his side. He is survived by wife Alyce, three children, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
