Marion Jones
Professor, Dance, 1972 to 1999

Marion Jones, 92, Professor Emeritus, ASU, died April 4, 2014. After two years of college, Marion moved to New York where she studied modern dance and ballet. She became a member of the Lester Horton Dance Company and taught at several institutions including Cornell University. With husband Austin, and two children she moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1968. In 1972 she joined the ASU Dance faculty. In 1978 she produced and directed a Dance Tribute to Doris Humphrey, a concert reviewed in Dance Magazine and documented by KAET. Marion choreographed for Desert Dance Theatre from its founding, and served as Artistic Director from 1988 to 2005. She received several awards including the AZ Commission on the Arts, Choreographer's Fellowship award, 1982; the Arts Achievement Award from Wayne State University, 1998; and the AZ Governor's Arts Award in Arts Education, 2013. She earned a BA degree from Wayne State University and an MA degree from ASU. She retired from ASU in 1999.
