Lewis Neeb

Lewis S. Neeb P. E., FNSPE,DMCSPE, 78, passed away on Wednesday, October 3, 2012. Neeb was born in Phoenix and raised in Tempe. His mother was an elementary and secondary school teacher and an Executive Secretary of the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Architects. His father, Lewis, was a college professor, PhD., and Dean of the Industrial Arts Department at ASU in the 1930s. Neeb Hall, one of the largest lecture halls on campus, is named for his father who was very active in the community, serving as the president of the Tempe Chamber of Commerce, and head of the Civil Aeronautics Authority pilot training program that employed ASU ground school instruction and training facilities at Sky Harbor Airport. The lighted star and camels that adorn "A" Mountain at Christmas were originally designed and built by Professor Neeb. Mr. Neeb studied at ASU and the University of Arizona and in 1959 received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He held a license to practice both Professional Civil Engineering and Land Surveying in California and Arizona, and was also a general engineering and building contractor (A&B) and a Safety Engineer in California. Neeb assisted in the creation of the design of the water system for Sun City, Ariz., and a stint as resident engineer for large water and sewer works in Flagstaff and Douglas, Ariz. Throughout his life, Neeb held many professional leadership positions. Mr. Neeb is survived by his partner of 19 years, Patricia E. Smith, a daughter, three grandchildren and a sister.
