Karl "Coach" Dowhie, 63, died August 30, 2009. He and his wife moved to Phoenix in 1969. After earning his MFA/Education from ASU, he taught at ASU, Phoenix College, Chandler High School and participated in many 'visiting artist' programs. His large Southwest landscapes, waterscapes, and botanical paintings and prints are in many public and private collections. His Grand Canyon masterpiece from the Recession Artist River Expedition, "Matkatimiba", is in the permanent collection of the Scottsdale Center for the Arts. His creative signage marked the redesign of the Desert Botanical Garden, and his 2007 one-man show of 'grand botanicals' celebrated the reopening of the Casa Grande Museum. His works can be viewed at Karl Dowhie Studios in Tempe. His contributions to Tempe and Arizona include helping to found the Tempe Center for the Arts, serving as its first Director in 1981; President of Arizona and USA Junior Olympic Freestyle Wrestling and Coach of their 1990 Championship Team; President of the Chandler Education Association; and organizer and Head Coach of Tempe Pop Warner. He is survived by Lynne Dowhie, his wife of 43 years, a son, a daughter, two grandchildren and three brothers.
