Dr. John B. Barnes, 89, passed away June 5, 2013. He received a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Denver and his Doctorate from the University of Wyoming in 1955. His career in Higher Education started at Arizona State College as a middle administrator when he aided President Grady Gammage in a successful state-wide referendum to change the name to Arizona State University; he served five years as Director of Research and Services. He was 38 years old when chosen to become the Founding President of Arizona Western College in Yuma, the first community college in Arizona in 30 years. While there he became a summer visiting lecturer at the University of Wisconsin and Michigan State. In 1967 he became the President of Boise College in transition to Boise State and Boise State University. He resigned after 10 years and became the Professor Higher Education at Northern Arizona University. Several years later after his vision and hearing diminished, he retired and returned to Boise. His wife preceded him in death in 2010. He is survived by two daughters, two grandchildren and a sister. Per his wishes, there will be no services.
