Joan Miller, 79, passed away on May 8, 2010. She attended Brooklyn College where she studied English and Mathematics. She was a pioneer in the infancy of the computer era, and worked as a programmer and data processing manager for firms including Computer Usage, BBD&O and ASU. In the early years, she learned to program computers in hexadecimal codes and assembler language. She worked on one of the earliest computer language compilers prior to her work in data processing applications. Joan survived husbands Julius Korein, Fred Miller and Rick Castro. After spending the first part of her life in New York, Joan moved to Tempe, Arizona for 30 years, returning to New York in 2007. She is survived by a sister, three children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
