Helen Virginia Wootton

Helen Virginia Wootton, 92, passed away on October 6, 2013. Helen was a consummate musician, mastering the violin, piano and then discovering a passion and talent for singing. She trained as an opera singer, attended Washington College of Music, Peabody Conservatory of Music and auditioned with the Metropolitan Opera. When she was 16 years old she sang Mozart's "Alleluia" on a program with President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During WWII she worked as a receptionist at Walter Reed Army Hospital. She and her husband, Richard T. Wootton made their home in Salt Lake City, Utah where they started their family of six children. In 1955 they moved to Laie, Hawaii, where Richard was president of The Church College of Hawaii (now Brigham Young University-Hawaii). In 1964 they moved to Tempe, Arizona, where Richard was a Professor of Education at ASU. Helen received her B.A. in English from ASU. She taught music at Gilliland Junior High and Curry Elementary. In later years she played violin with the Tempe Symphony Orchestra. She is survived by a brother, six children, 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Richard T. Wootton. Helen’s funeral will be Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Church, 1248 S. 48th Street (off Southern between Greenfield and Higley) Mesa, Az. Dedication of the gravesite and burial will take place at the City of Mesa Cemetery, 1212 Center St. Mesa, Arizona following the funeral. (Source: Arizona Republic)
