ASU remembers
Guido Gustav Weigend
Dean, College of Liberal Arts - 1976 to 1984
Professor of Geography
Guido Gustav Weigend, 96, passed away on April 1, 2016. Guido was born in Zeltweg, Austria and raised in Vienna. At age 18, just after Hitler invaded Austria on March 12, 1938, Guido was drafted into the German army. Not wanting to serve in the Hitler regime, he escaped to the United States and began his education at the University of Chicago, where he studied geography. When the USA entered the war in 1942, Guido immediately volunteered to serve for the United States. Because of his knowledge of geography and his proficiency in languages, the Armed Forces assigned him to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the predecessor to the CIA. (There is a video clip of the ASURA Video History Project interview with Guido and his daughter, Cynthia Buness, talking about OSS.) After WWII, Guido returned to the University of Chicago to finish his undergraduate degree and obtain his PhD. Guido had a long and successful career in post-secondary education, retiring first from Rutgers University as Associate Dean, and then coming to ASU in 1976. He served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts from 1976-1984 and then as Professor of Geography until he retired in 1989. After retiring, Guido served on the ASURA board from 1993-1996; as Vice President 1994-1995; chair of AZ Council of Retired University Employees 1994-1995 and chair of the Scholarship Committee 1996-1998. Guido is survived by three children, five grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Guido will be laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona with his wife, Areta, who passed away in 1993.
