Gerald Olson

Dr. Gerald V. Olson, 87, died on April 25, 2016. He joined the Army Air Force in 1946 serving in Japan and later in Germany. Jerry received his Bachelors in Education in 1955 and his Masters in Education in 1957 — both from ASU. In 1978 he received a Doctorate in Education Administration from NAU. Jerry started in the Washington District as a 6th grade teacher in 1955 and held various positions, becoming Superintendent in 1987 until he retired in 1990. A few years later he was asked to return as Acting Superintendent for another year. His wife, Mollie, taught in the Tempe High School District. In 1956 Jerry started keeping statistics at ASU sports events. His stat crew came from his teaching friends which grew into Olson's Statistical Services when he joined with John Olson (an unrelated but kindred spirit who also loved ASU and sports). ASU named the Statistics Booth at Sun Devil Stadium after Jerry in recognition of over 50 years of accurate and timely stat keeping. Jerry is survived by his wife, Mollie, two daughters, four granddaughters and numerous great grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
