Gary grew up in the little western Pennsylvania town of Mars, PA.  He received his BS and MEd at Edinboro State College in PA and his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh.  He started his college teaching career at Slippery Rock State in PA and later went to Salisbury State on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  He has served as visiting lecturer at Syracuse University and Armidale College of Advanced Education in NSW Australia.  He arrived full time at ASU in the fall of 1975, after having served as visiting lecturer during the 1974 and 75 summer sessions.  Gary retired in December 2000, but continued working part time for an additional five years.

Gary and his wife Marge enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and RVing.  Travel is also a passion, with trips to China, Japan, Australia, Costa Rica, Peru and Europe.  He has organized groups and taken them camping around Australia and touring through China and South Africa.
