Fred Alvin Giles, 75, passed away on February 14, 2015. Fred attended Weber State University. He became a machinist and production engineer where he worked for Sperry Rand and Hill Air Force Base in Utah. He moved to California and worked at Convair. He was Director of Rohr Industries of Chula Vista where he oversaw projects such as the first turbine-powered trains in the U.S., the rapid transit system for San Francisco (BART) train car, Amtrak Trains, and the Hydro boat. In 1978, he moved to Arizona and served as the director of Physical Resources at NAU for several years. Other positions he held were supervisor of maintenance, assistant director of physical plant, and Emergency and Management Preparedness planner. He left NAU in 1996. He later retired from ASU as associate director of Physical Resources. He is survived by his wife: Sanya, three children, four grandchildren and his brother. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister. A funeral service was held February 20, 2015, at Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood with a graveside service following at the Sedona Community Cemetery. (Source: ASU Foundation)
