Francis J. Carey, Jr.

Francis J. Carey Jr., 88, died November 1, 2014. He was a prominent Philadelphia lawyer, investment banker and philanthropist. He joined the Navy at the age of 16 and served as a communications officer on the cargo ship USS Nicolet in the Pacific Theater. He was discharged in 1946. His maternal grandfather, John S. Armstrong, was instrumental in supporting the founding of Tempe Normal School in the Arizona legislature. (Armstrong Hall on the ASU Tempe campus is named for John S. Armstrong.) Frank graduated from the Gilman school in 1943. He went on to Princeton University and transferred to the University of Pennsylvania. After his Navy service, he returned to Penn and earned a law degree. He served as law secretary to Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice John C. Bell Jr., then joined the Philadelphia law firm of Townsend, Elliott & Munson, which later became Reed Smith LLP. When his brother, William, founded the real-estate investment firm W.P. Carey Inc. in 1973, Frank joined as a director. After retiring from his law practice, he became president of W.P. Carey. He served as chairman and CEO of the W.P. Carey Foundation, which was instrumental in the founding of W.P. Carey School of Business at ASU. Frank was predeceased by his wife Emily. He is survived by two sons, three daughters and 10 grandchildren. Services: 11 a.m. Nov. 24 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 610 Church Road, Fort Washington.
