February 2026 Gardening in the Desert

   

This presentation covered a wide variety of strategies for keeping desert landscapes and gardens beautiful. Noelle described common mistakes such as improper pruning, over-fertilizing, poor plant choices, and incorrect watering. She discussed proven techniques to help plants flourish despite the heat. Seminar notes provide the main strategies discussed in this session (attached).

Seminar Notes

Noelle Johnson is known as the Arizona Plant Lady. She is an author, horticulturist, instructor, and landscape consultant. Noelle has a B.S. degree from ASU in Plant Biology/Urban Horticulture. Her books include The Water-Smart Garden and The Dry Climate Garden. Her work has appeared on CNN, PBS, NPR, and Martha Stewart Living. Noelle is also a columnist for Phoenix Home & Garden magazine and works with the Water Use It Wisely campaign. Her passion and goals are to teach and inspire desert-dwellers with the tools to grow and maintain beautiful gardens that thrive in a hot, dry climate.
