February 2025 Seminar - Artificial Intelligence: What is it and How is it Transforming Lives
The February 2025 seminar was presented by Tina Miller, Executive Director, Creative x Communications in the Enterprise Technology division of ASU. Tina began the seminar by briefly giving us an overview of ASU’s current enrollment before diving into the heart of the topic – artificial intelligence. Tina reminded us that while AI may seem to be a new idea, we’ve actually been using it for more than a decade in applications like Siri/Alexa, spell check, Netflix, and Amazon, to name a few. ASU has established a set of guiding tenets it uses when incorporating AI – principled innovation, shaping tomorrow’s innovations, empowering creativity, helping our community keep pace responsibly and accessible tech for all.
Tina then went into various ways in which AI is incorporated into our daily lives, which includes health care, financial management and social connections. From there, she discussed several ways in which AI is currently being used to benefit the student experience at ASU, along with an overview of the number of projects currently in the works for development and implementation.
A brief interactive demonstration was given to show the participants the capabilities, as well as some of the limitations of AI. She cautioned us that as consumers of information, AI is only as good as the data repository that exists behind the scenes. Tina also provided some guidelines for safe and responsible use of AI.
