Edward Carson

Edward Mansfield Carson, 80, passed away on March 12, 2010. Ed was an ASU graduate. He earned his Masters Degree in Banking from the Stonier Graduate school of Banking. Ed enjoyed a distinguished career with First Interstate Bancorp, where he began as a teller in 1951. In 1973 he was promoted to COO & Director then elected President & CEO in 1977. In 1985 he was elected President of First Interstate Bancorp in Los Angeles and Chairman & CEO in 1990. He retired in 1995. Ed's record of service to both Phoenix and Los Angeles was extraordinary. He served on the Boards of the Arizona Council for Economic Education, Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, Phoenix Executive Club, the Phoenix Symphony Association, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History Foundation, and others. The Carson name was synonymous with philanthropy. He was extremely generous in both Phoenix and Los Angeles and received many honors in both cities. Ed and Nadine Carson's support of ASU included leadership with the Old Main Restoration, the Edward and Nadine Carson Presidential Chair and the Nadine and Ed Carson Student Athlete Center in Intercollegiate Athletics. Carson's record of service to ASU goes back to his senior year when he served as student body president. He also served as president of the ASU Alumni Association, was a member of the ASU Architecture Foundation and the ASU Foundation Board, and was a founding member of both the ASU Law Society and the College of Business Dean's Council of 100. He was also instrumental in the creation of the College of Business' First Interstate Center for Services Marketing and Management, the country's leading university-based hub for study in the field. He also served as co-chair of the ASU Campaign for Leadership. He received the Arizona  Board of Regents "Outstanding Service to Higher Education" Award and the Doctor of Humane Letters from ASU. Ed was preceded in death by his wife Nadine. He is survived by a daughter, a son, two grandchildren and two sisters.
