ASU remembers
Edward Allan Brawley
Professor, Social Work - retired in 2003
May 18, 2013
Edward Allan Brawley, 78, died May 18, 2013, following an apparent accident when he failed to return from a bike ride in Scottsdale. A graduate of Strathclyde University, Scotland and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, he had a long and distinguished career as professor and administrator at Penn State and at ASU West. At ASU West he was professor emeritus of social work; he retired in 2003. Author of many books and articles, he advocated for improving the social conditions of the poor. He is survived by his wife, Emilia E. Martinez-Brawley, Ed.D. ACSW, Professor of Social Work and John F. Roatch Distinguished Community Service Scholar at ASU, currently on assignment at the College of Extended Education. She is the former Dean of the School of Social Work, having served in that capacity from 1992 to 1998. He is also survived by sons, daughters-in-law and a grandson. Remembrances to St. Mary's Food Bank or Scottsdale Mustang Library. (Source: Arizona Republic and other sources). Two ASURA colleagues comment: This is a terrible loss. He was a wonderful colleague, but even more, a genuinely good and decent person whom you could always trust. I sought his counsel often and we spent many pleasant hours talking about all sorts of subjects, especially Scotland. (Glenn Irvin) Allan was a good colleague--calm, smart, super competent, and classy. He was our go-to guy at West. He came to ASU West when his spouse, Emilia Martinez-Brawley, was hired as Dean of the School of Social Work. (David Schwalm)
