Dorothy Gerrard

Dorothy Gerrard, RN, 90, passed away on June 10, 2010. Dorothy attended the University of British Columbia and received her Public Health Certificate in 1942; earned her BS at the University of Oregon in 1953, became a US Citizen in 1957, and went on to receive a Master's degree in Public Health Nursing Administration from the University of Colorado in 1959. She was the Director of the Denver Visiting Nurse Association until 1961, when she moved to Scottsdale to become the Executive Director of the Visiting Nurse Association here. She was a founding member of the National Association of Home Health Agencies. She was a longtime advisor and guest lecturer to nursing students at ASU. She received the College of Nursing Distinguished Nurse award in 1980, the Margaret E. Lewis Pioneer Award for Outstanding Leadership in 1981 and the 1983 Sammy Award from Good Samaritan hospital for her outstanding contributions in providing quality patient care. She was also involved in getting the "Meals on Wheels" program started and helped form the committee that began Hospice of the Valley. She is survived by her close friend Eileen Rogers, a nephew, niece and six great nieces.
